When I recognized that a decision made over 110 years ago and 5,000 miles away contributed to who he is today, I began to reflect differently on my life. In doing so, I identified other choices made by ancestors, those made by contemporaries, and importantly, those made by myself. I also identified the chance occurrences that have made a difference.

These threads of choice and chance have been woven together to create the tapestry of my life. They are the materials from which my life story is braided, giving rise to self-reflection and prompting questions such as...Why is my life St. Louis-centric and what has that meant? What choices and chance occurrences resulted in me being married to Ann and being the grandparents of four? Why, at age 79, am I still playing baseball? Why did I begin writing, leading to authoring this, my 16th book?.
